Global Ear Care Day

The International Federation of Hard of Hearing People, of which HLAA is a member organization, joins the World Health Organization (WHO) in drawing attention to the need for the prevention of hearing loss. Therefore, March 3, 2015, is declared as Ear Care Day.

According to the International Federation of Hard of Hearing People (IFHOH), more than 360 million persons have a hearing loss, representing five percent of the world’s population. Among adults, 15 percent have a hearing loss. These are staggering numbers and especially concerning is that for some persons the hearing loss could be prevented.

This year’s Ear Care Day draws particular attention to the loss of hearing through the unsafe use of personal audio devices such as smartphones and MPs players and exposure to damaging levels of sound in entertainment venues. As noted by WHO, “Hearing is a precious faculty, which impacts educational, professional and social development.”
